Blueberries

Blueberries start late June/early July through mid-late August.

EARLY SEASON

Duke is considered the best early season cultivar available. The fruit size and quality is very good but the flavor can be bland if picked late.

MID-SEASON

Bluecrop is the most widely planted mid-season cultivar in the world. It produces high yields of medium sized, firm fruit with good flavor.

Bluejay produces moderate crops of medium sized, high quality fruit. It is resistant to some viral diseases and moderately resistant to mummy berry.

Blueray is a variety with a very good fruit size and good flavor.

LATE SEASON

Elliott is a very late season berry with very good shelf life, 30 - 45 days in a modified atmosphere. The fruit is large and firm but can be tart because it turns blue before ripe.

Jersey is an old (1928) cultivar with small and soft berries.

Honey

Our honey is from hives at the orchard which are maintained by Chickabuzz.

BEEKEEPING

Chickabuzz is raw honey and is a golden delicious treasure. Because the honey is not heated for straining, the floral essences are preserved. Jarred in reusable glass containers.

Chickabuzz Honey is harvested seasonally in small batches. Late spring/early summer honey may feature nectar from dandelion, tulip tree, black locust, or basswood. Mid-summer honey features nectar from clover, sumac, thistle, or some black raspberry and blackberry if there are enough flowers around.

The amount of fall honey available depends a lot on the amount of rain that fell through the summer, and on not getting too much fall rain. So, it's not every year that we get the dark fall honey that crystallizes so readily. It's a treat!
